Summary
Ajowain, the fruits of Trachyspermum ammi L. (Carum copticum Benth. and Hook.) are extensively used in the indigenous systems of medicine in India. The fruits form an important article of commerce and are exported to
other countries for the production of essential oil which contains 35–60 % thymol. Three varieties of Ajowain are available commercially. A detailed pharmacognostical study of these three varieties and their adulterant is reported here.
Zusammenfassung
In Indien sind die Früchte von Trachyspermum ammi ein wichtiger Handelsartikel. Ihr ätherisches öl zeichnet sich durch einen Gehalt von 30–60 % Thymol aus. Die drei gebräuchlichsten Varietäten der Art und einer häufigen Verfälschung sind anatomisch beschrieben.
