Abstract

1.) Watery, 50 % methanol or pure methanol extracts with and without a pre-extraction from Withania somnifera at the amounts of 100, 316 or 1000 mg per kilo weight did not have the effect of a reduction of the central activity on mice in the following working models: light barrier, fly wheel, hexorbital change of sleeping periods, rotating stick and on rats in the test of motility.

2.) These extracts proved to be slightly toxic when applied orally. Only in the pure methanol extract without a preextraction signs of poisoning in the sense of a central suppression were noticable at an amount of 5000 mg per kilo weight.

3.) In the case of an oral application of the different extracts from Withania somnifera a sedation for therapeutic purposes cannot be reckoned with.

4.) The instrument for measuring the motility of rats by means of piezoelectrical receivers proved to be suitable for a differentiated determination of the static and the locomotory activities.
