THIN–LAYER CHROMATOGRAPHIC STUDY OF THE STEROIDAL AND CARDINOLIDE CONSTITUENTS OF PENSTEMON SPECIES OF NORTH DAKOTA

Abstract

Four species of Penstemon were studied for their steroidal and cardinolide constituents using tic. The Chromatographie patterns of the ethanol and water extracts were characteristic for each species. The sixteen plant parts examined contained five different digitalis glycosides. All plant parts contained significant quantities of cardinolides.

The chromatograms indicated that a number of additional unidentified cardinolide compounds were present in all of the extracts.
