Effect of Cortisol on the Level of Pyridoxal Phosphate-Dependent Enzymes in the Rat Liver: New Supports for Antagonism Between Female Sex Hormones and Cortisol

Abstract

Cortisol injections into female rats induced modifications of levels of pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzymes in the liver; however, when compared to those observed in the male rat under the same conditions, significant changes appeared in the magnitude of the changes. On the other hand, oophorectomized females treated with cortisol exhibited responses which, although lower, were similar to those reported for the male rats. These results afford new evidences that effect of cortisol on enzyme activities depend upon the sex of the animal, and thereby support the view that an antagonism occurs between female sex hormones and cortisol.
