Significance

The 1,2-addition reaction of arylboronic acids and carbonyl compounds is a useful tool for alcohol synthesis, where arylboronic species serve as storable analogues of highly reactive Mg- or Li-organometallic compounds. The presented method has advantages of very low catalyst loading (up to 0.01 mol%) as well as relatively broad substrate scope. The reactions with enones give bis-arylated adducts: 1,3-diaryl-1-propanols.
