Significance

The Pd(0)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) catalyst was prepared by mixing Pd(OAc)2 and a MeOH solution of PEI under Ar atmosphere, followed by treatment with H2 (1 atm). The partial hydrogenation of internal alkynes 1 was carried out in the presence of Pd(0)/PEI under 1 atm of H2 to give the corresponding cis-olefins 2 with high selectivity. Terminal alkynes 5 also underwent the partial hydrogenation with Pd(0)/PEI to afford vinyl 6 as major products.
