Significance

A ruthenium catalyst stabilized on nanocrystalline magnesium oxide (Ru-CHNAP-MgO) was prepared and found to promote aerobic oxidation of alcohols. Thus, Ru-CHNAP-MgO (Ru loading = 1.64 mmol/g) was obtained by the aqueous reaction of RuCl3 and CHNAP-MgO, which was prepared by mixing nanocrystalline MgO and choline hydroxide in THF. Oxidation of benzyl alcohol with O2 was carried out under molecular O2 in the presence of 16 mol% Ru of the Ru-CHNAP-MgO to give benzaldehyde in 98% yield. The Ru catalyst was recovered and reused four times without any loss of catalytic activity (average 98% yields for 4 times).
