Significance
The authors describe the first enantioselective ring opening of meso-epoxides by (phenylseleno)silanes as nucleophilic selenium source and commercial or readily available salen(chromium) catalysts. This desymmetrization reaction provides a simple and convenient approach to synthetically useful optically active β-hydroxyselenides.
