The role of ultrasound scanning in the reproductive tract has revolutionized our understanding of the physiology and pathology of the pelvis. We have not previously had a separate issue of Seminars in Reproductive Medicine on this topic, which is well overdue. I have asked Steven R. Goldstein, M.D., to serve as guest editor for this issue, entitled “Ultrasound Scanning in Reproductive Medicine and Infertility.” Dr. Goldstein, as noted below, spent his internship in obstetrics and gynecology at Parkland Hospital and UT Southwestern from 1975 to 1976.

Dr. Steven R. Goldstein is a magna cum laude graduate of Colgate University with a baccalaureate in biology. He graduated from the New York University School of Medicine in 1975 and did an internship in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas, in 1975-1976. He did a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at New York University Affiliated Hospitals/Bellevue Hospital Center from 1976 to 1980. In 1980, he joined the faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York University School of Medicine, rising to his current position of professor of obstetrics and gynecology, a tenured full-time academic position. However, in this capacity he maintains a half-time private practice as a generalist in obstetrics and gynecology in the Faculty Practice suites at New York University.

His long-standing interests in ob/gyn ultrasound have led him to his current position as director of gynecologic ultrasound at New York University Medical Center. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and is currently 1st vice president of this national organization. He serves on the board of trustees of the North American Menopause Society. He served on the board of directors of the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers having prepared the test and administered policy for the certification of more than 40,000 sonographers nationwide. He is a past chairman of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, New York Section. He is the author of their technical bulletin “Ultrasound in Gynecology” as well as the author of their practice guidelines on selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs). He serves as the liaison physician from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology to the Women's Health Imaging Panel of the American College of Radiology. He is an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

His pioneering work in menopausal and perimenopausal ultrasound led him into design of uterine safety studies for several SERMs. In addition, he is the codirector of the Bone Densitometry Unit at NYU Medical Center. Clinically, his practice has evolved into issues of menopausal and perimenopausal medicine with particular interest in ultrasound applications both for adnexal masses and abnormal bleeding.

He has authored a textbook entitled Endovaginal Ultrasound and as well as one entitled Ultrasound in Gynecology. More recently, he authored Imaging in the Infertile Couple and one entitled Textbook of Perimenopausal Gynecology. He is one of the most highly recognized and regarded individuals in the field of vaginal probe ultrasound worldwide. He has authored more than 30 chapters in textbooks as well as more than 60 original research articles. He has been a guest faculty member, invited speaker, visiting professor, or course director more than 300 times throughout the United States and, in fact, the entire world.

He is the author of the book Could it be…Perimenopause? published by Little, Brown as well as The Estrogen Alternative published by Putnam.

Dr. Goldstein has successfully recruited several outstanding physicians experienced in ultrasound to complete this issue. This issue contains a large number of figures and tables and will be a great resource for readers of Seminars in Reproductive Medicine.
