Significance

The authors developed a one-pot biocatalytic method for the asymmetric reduction of aryl imines 1. Whole cells of Candida parapsilosis ATCC 7330 (2) generate the corresponding secondary amines 3 without the need for adding a cofactor in aqueous medium. Excellent enantiomeric ratios (er = 97.5:2.5 up to >99.5:0.5) and good yields (55-80%) are reported.
