Medizin der Schmerzen - Divinum est dolorem sedare

Zusammenfassung

Während die antike Medizin ihre einschränkten Möglichkeiten in der Behandlung der Schmerzen durch die Erhöhung ins Göttliche abstrahierte, hat sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten eine eigene Medizin der Schmerzen entwickelt. Patienten werden als Kunden für ein schmerzfreies Leben umworben. Dabei werden technisch-operative und pharmakologische Behandlungsoptionen trotzt eingeschränkter Behandlungsprognosen gegenüber biopsychosozialen Bewältigungsmöglichkeiten bevorzugt und mit Nachdruck angeboten. Der Einfluss der Medizin- und Pharmaindustrie auf den Schmerzmarkt ist offensichtlich.

Abstract

While antique medicine derived its poor capacities of pain treatment by raising into divine expressions, the last decades brought along a pain medicine of its own. Patients are recruited as customers for a painfree life. Surgical and pharmacological treatment options are preferred to biopsychosocial approaches despite poor prognoses. The influence of industry on the pain market is striking.

1 Es ist streitig, ob „divinum” mit göttlich oder mit erhaben zu übersetzen sei. Für die Ausführungen hier ist dies unerheblich, denn beide Übersetzungen deuten an, dass es sich um nicht alltägliche Unternehmungen und Erfolge handelt, also solche, die außergewöhnliche Umstände anzeigen, besonderer Gabe, Ausstattung und Gunst bedürfen!
