ABSTRACT
Premature closure of the foramen ovale is a rare cardiac anomaly. Severe right-sided
heart failure accounts for the hepatomegaly, ascites, pleural and pericardial effusions,
and generalized edema of these hydropic fetuses. Premature closure of the foramen
ovale should be a part of the differential diagnosis when unexplained fetal hydrops
is encountered.
