Significance

The authors were able to synthesize macrocyclic host 3, which binds phosphate and acetate in aqueous solution at neutral pH. Five equivalents of LiOH were added to a solution of [(η6-benzene)RuCl2]2 as Ru complex 1 and bis(dihydroxypyridine) as ligand 2 in D2O to afford the water-soluble capsule 3 with a yield of >90%, as evidenced from in situ NMR spectroscopy.
