Significance

It is believed that reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydroxyl radicals and peroxyl radicals, play a role in the process of aging and in diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alz­heimer’s diseases. The ability to detect such radicals selectively in an in vivo environment would provide a potent tool in studying the role of the oxy­gen-based radicals in such biological processes and would serve as a potential diagnostic tool. In this report, the authors describe a molecule which, coupled with electroparamagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, can achieve such feat.
