Significance
Ketones were alkylated with alcohols at their α-positions by use of a viologen polymer-supported nano-Pd catalyst. Linear viologen polymer 1 was ionically convoluted with palladate dianion to give polymeric palladate 2. Reduction of polymeric palladate 2 gave the viologen polymer-dispersion of nano-palladium particles (nano-Pd-V; 3). Methyl ketones 4 reacted with primary alkanols 5 in the presence of the nanopalladium catalyst 3 and an inorganic base to give the corresponding α-alkylated products in good to exellent yields.
