Significance

A conjugated polymer containing alternating donor and acceptor moieties in the backbone was synthesized and characterized by optical spectroscopy and X-ray crystal structure analysis. Polymer P1 shows efficient charge transfer between the carbazole donor groups and diketone-bridged pentaphenylene acceptor in the solid state. Both the polymer backbone and the bulky N-substituent of the carbazole moiety form individual pi-stacks that result in discrete domains within the polymer film.
