Significance

Poly[styrene(iodo diacetate)]-mediated oxidative cleavage of vicinal diols to aldehydes was developed. Thus, the reactions of 1,2-diols with 1.2 mol equivalents of poly[styrene(iodo diacetate)] at room temperature gave the corresponding aldehydes in 86-98% yield. The recovered polymer reagent was reoxidized with peracetic acid to poly[styrene(iodo diacetate)] in accordance with a literature procedure (see: H. Togo, G. Nogami, M. Yokoyama Synlett 1998, 534-536).
