Significance

Ladder-type precursor polymers of poly(acene) 2 were successfully synthesized via a double Heck reaction of bis-functionalized monomers 1, and the polymers were characterized by NMR, ESR, UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, and CV, with the help of a few model compounds. Attachment of branched side chains on the monomer was found to significantly improve the polymerization, owing to the enhanced solubility of the resulting polymer. Computation studies indicated that polymers 2 possess a zig-zag conformation. The conversion of this nonplanar ladder polymer to poly(acene) is currently under study.
