Significance

The phytohormone abscisic acid plays a crucial role in transpiration, seed germination, embryo maturation and stress responses in plants. An efficient synthesis of both enantiomers of abscisic acid (6 steps, 30% overall yield) starting from commercially available 4-oxoisophrone is reported.
