Significance

The utility of living free radical polymerizations is in the preparation of controlled molecular weight homopolymers and block copolymers. Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) [poly(HEMA)] and poly(methyl methacrylate) are useful for the creation of new materials for biological applications. The ability to create a tapered stereochemical composition in the poly(HEMA) will be useful in tailoring interfaces between biomedical devices/materials and water.
