Significance

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been surface-functionalized via Cr(CO)6/pressure-promoted Diels-Alder cycloadditions with electron-rich dienes. The effects of hexacarbonylchromium(0) and high pressure appear to be synergistic, and the success of the reaction is, at the moment, limited to electron-rich dienes. Characterization was done using spectroscopy as well as thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). By the latter technique, it is estimated that there is one functional group for every 33 carbon atoms.
