Significance

The addition of organometallic reagents to alkynes is an important method for forming a new C-C bond. The authors report here a novel Fe-catalyzed carbomagnesiation of propargylic and homopropargylic alcohols. It offers a simple preparation of a broad variety of polysubstituted allylic and homoallylic alcohols, using environmentally benign reagents and catalysts. The products are obtained with excellent regio- andE/Z selectivity and in good yields. Enantiopure propargylic alcohols react with retention of chirality.
