Significance

The synthesis of 14-substituted-14H-dibenzo[a,j]xanthenes promoted by Amberlyst-15 was demonstrated. Thus, condensation of β-naphthol (2 equiv) with benzaldehyde (1 equiv) was performed in the presence of Amberlyst-15 as catalyst at 125 °C for 2 h under solvent-free conditions to give 14-substituted-14H-dibenzo[a,j]xanthene in 94% yield. Eleven examples of various aldehydes and β-naphthols were demonstrated (80-94% yields).
