Significance

The authors report a facile ring closure that occurs by irradiation with white light, transforming the nonemissive molecule 1 to the fluorophore 2. The ring closure is irreversible, and none of the product resulting from a single ring closure could be identified. The reaction occurs in N2-purged acetonitrile without the prescence of an added oxidant. The authors plan further investigation into the mechanism of this interesting transformation.
