Atherosclerotic changes in the aorta and coronary arteries can be found already early
in childhood and adolescence. Numerous autopsy and non invasive studies clearly demonstrate,
that the known cardiovascular risk factors play a causative role for the initiation
of early atherosclerotic lesions. In case of persistence of risk factors, atherosclerosis
often progresses and results in clinical manifestation of cardiovascular diseases
in adulthood. Therefore, primary prevention or intervention in case of presence of
cardiovascular risk factors is important and should be initiated early in life.
Key Words
atherosclerosis - early manifestation - risk factors - prevention
