Significance
This contribution reports the synthesis and design of a receptor capable of promoting strong cation-π-interactions. The synthesis uses ring formation and sterics to place the pendant phenyls with the ion binding ethers surrounding the phenyl ring in a ‘fence’ configuration. The rigid nature of the structure allowed for crystallographic characterization of the K+ complex.
