Significance

A highly active immobilized phosphonium salt catalyst for the synthesis of propylene carbonate 3 was reported. Thus, 1 mol% silica-supported phosphonium iodide 2 catalyzed the reaction of propylene oxide 1 with carbon dioxide to give propylene carbonate 3 in quantitative yield. The rate constant of this reaction with catalyst 2 was about 300 times higher than that with P(n-Bu)4I.
