Significance

A method for the synthesis of substituted isoquinolines from the reaction of tert-butyl imines of 2-halobenzaldehydes and alkynes under nickel catalysis is reported. The reactions proceed in good to excellent yields and with high regioselectivity for unsymmetrical alkynes. Two possible mechanistic pathways were proposed without experimental evidence.
