Epidemiologische Forschung zur Gesundheit und den Erkrankungsrisiken der Bevölkerung
hat eine ganz erhebliche Bedeutung für die Erfassung der Risikofaktoren, denen die
Menschen im täglichen Leben ausgesetzt sind, und bei der Erfassung der Erfolge von
Präventivmaßnahmen, Verhaltensänderungen und Therapien. Die Epidemiologie bietet den
Orientierungsrahmen für Prozesse und Mechanismen, die in der Grundlagenforschung herausgearbeitet
werden, und liefert Parameter für die Beurteilung des Erfolgs medizinischer Maßnahmen.
Damit stellt sie wertvolle Basisdaten für das Gesundheitssystem insgesamt bereit.
Epidemiologische Forschung hat daher auch große Bedeutung in der Politikberatung.
Die epidemiologische Forschung bedarf einer langfristig aufgebauten Infrastruktur
und systematischer Organisation. Die Voraussetzungen hierfür sind in Deutschland nur
an wenigen Stellen gegeben - oder werden entsprechend genutzt. Es zeichnet die GSF
aus, ihre Rolle als Helmholtz-Zentrum wahrgenommen, eine herausragende Plattform für
die epidemiologische Forschung aufgebaut zu haben und über zwei Jahrzehnte hinweg
zu unterhalten: zunächst als ein Standbein des internationalen WHO-Projekts MONICA,
dann seit 1996 weitergeführt als „Kooperative Gesundheitsforschung in der Region Augsburg”,
kurz KORA.
Kooperation ist notwendig, um ein solches Projekt zum Erfolg zu führen, aber auch
Organisationstalent und Engagement. Dies haben die Verantwortlichen des Projekts bewiesen
und belegen das mit der großen Zahl wesentlicher wissenschaftlicher Ergebnisse. Das
hat KORA zu einem unverzichtbaren Partner in wichtigen nationalen Projekten gemacht,
so im Nationalen Genomforschungsnetz. Auch diese Einbindung belegt die eingangs ausgeführte
Bedeutung epidemiologischer Forschung als unverzichtbares Element moderner biomedizinischer
Forschung.
Ich bin mir sicher, dass MONICA/KORA auch über den 20. Geburtstag hinaus weiter ein
wichtiger Partner in der Gesundheitsforschung in Deutschland und in internationalen
Projekten bleiben wird. Ich gratuliere den Verantwortlichen und Mitarbeitern des Projekts
zu ihrer Initiative, Ausdauer und zu ihrem Erfolg.

Epidemiological research related to health and disease risks of the population is
very important for determining which risk factors people are exposed to in daily life,
and assessing the success of preventive measures, changes in behaviour, and therapies.
Epidemiology provides an orientation framework for the processes and mechanisms that
are developed in basic research and provides parameters for evaluating the success
of medical interventions. In this way it provides valuable baseline data for the whole
health care system. Thus epidemiological research is also of great importance in advising
policy.
Epidemiological research requires a long-term infrastructure and systematic organisation.
The prerequisites for this are only present - or only used in this way - in a few
places in Germany. The GSF, recognising in its role as a Helmholtz centre, is remarkable
for having established an outstanding platform for epidemiological research which
it has continued over two decades: first as a pillar of support for the international
WHO project MONICA, and after 1996 as the ‘Co-operative Health Research in the Region
of Augsburg’, in short KORA. Cooperation is necessary in order to lead such a project
to success, but so is organisational talent and commitment. Those responsible for
the project have shown these abilities and given proof with a large number of important
scientific results. This has made KORA into an indispensable partner in important
national projects, for example the National Genome Research Network. This integration
demonstrates further the importance of epidemiological research as an indispensable
element of modern biomedical research, which I mentioned initially.
I am sure that MONICA/KORA will continue beyond its 20th Anniversary to be an important
partner in health research in Germany and in international projects. I congratulate
those responsible and all those working in the project to their initiative and perseverance
and to their success.
