Abstract
A 48-year old male patient suffered from acute memory dysfunctions, which recurred
with a high frequency in the course of many weeks. An altered short-term memory during
the attacks and a persisting retrograde amnesia including the recent year were prominent.
No other psychological or neurological disorders accompanied the attacks, nor did
the attacks affect consciousness. On the bases of EEG abnormalities, a high recurrence
rate of the symptoms, and a quick response to anti-epileptic drugs, we established
the diagnosis of a transient epileptic amnesia (TEA). We suggest that TEA is not to
be classified under transient global amnesia (TGA), but is instead a distinct disorder
and an important differential diagnosis to TGA.
