Zhaomin Xu, MD, MPH

Dr. Zhaomin (Tim) Xu is a staff colon and rectal surgeon and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Rochester School in Rochester, NY. Tim was born in Shanghai, China, and immigrated to the United States at the age of 7. He attended the University of Rochester as an undergraduate, where he majored in Financial Economics and Microbiology. He then remained at the University of Rochester for medical school and his General Surgery Residency. During this time, he spent 2 years as a dedicated clinical research fellow under the mentorship of Drs. Fergal Fleming and Larissa Temple and obtained a Master's in Public Health from the University of Rochester.
Tim then came to join us in Cleveland, where he completed his Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. From there, he returned to join the faculty at the University of Rochester. He is a busy clinical surgeon and enjoys treating all aspects of colorectal pathologies. He took on the role of Medical Director for the Anal Dysplasia Clinic soon after joining. Under his leadership, the clinic has grown year after year and actively works with community partners to improve anal cancer screening access. He also enjoys teaching and working with residents and is part of the General Surgery Residency Education Team as the residency ombudsman. His research interests focus on outcomes and disparities among patients with various types of colorectal disease, including access to care and genetic counseling. He remains a productive researcher, with over 30 articles and book chapters to his credit, and has been an invited lecturer at many national conferences.
He and his wife have three children and a dog. His wife is a child neurologist at the University of Rochester and specializes in neurogenetics and neuromuscular disorders. Outside of medicine, he enjoys entertaining his children, running, and cooking.
Tim was an outstanding fellow, technically superb, and had incredible rapport with patients and staff. It comes as no surprise, this has continued as he has gone on in his career. On behalf of the readers and staff of Clinics of Colon and Rectal Surgery, I sincerely thank Dr. Xu for serving as a Guest Editor and for providing us with a superb issue on Anal Dysplasia.
