Kontis TC, Lacombe VG. Cosmetic Injection Techniques: A Text and Video Guide to Neurotoxins and Fillers. Second edition. New York, NY: Thieme; 2019.

In the second edition of this comprehensive text and accompanying video library, Drs. Kontis and Lacombe have created a far-reaching guide to cosmetic facial injections that should be required reading for the novice and expert injector alike. There has long been a need for a work that synthesizes years of injecting experience and presents it in a practically applicable way; the authors have succeeded in filling that gap.

The introductory chapters provide a thorough history of the science and evolution of injectables with which providers at all levels should be familiar. Drs. Kontis and Lacombe provide detailed instructions for the preparation and application of fillers and neurotoxins that will, without question, facilitate readers to maximize patient satisfaction and minimize complications.

The bulk of the text reads as a conversation with an experienced mentor, eager to share nuanced techniques for optimizing results that can only come from many years of facial injecting. The section on neurotoxin injection technique is particularly robust and includes many applications for rejuvenation of the mid- and lower face. Providers looking to offer treatment for hyperhidrosis, salivary gland hypertrophy, and chronic migraine will also find this section very useful.

The greatest gift that Drs. Kontis and Lacombe provide their readers is the collection of 30 step-by-step applications for facial fillers in Section V. Each application comes with an explanation of the anatomic considerations, injection technique, precautions, and site-specific postinjection instructions. No detail is left unwritten or injection pearl taken for granted. Combine this with the included video guide, and readers have a portable fellowship in cosmetic injections. Drs. Kontis and Lacombe should be applauded for this tremendous undertaking.
