Summary

The anticoagulant properties of an acid mucopolysaccharide preparation isolated from rat kidney were investigated. This preparation was characterized chemically in a previous work (1) and was found to contain heparin-like material.

A qualitative similarity in the behaviour of our preparation to that of heparin becomes apparent from the results obtained in a number of tests in which heparin was also tested. Quantitatively, this preparation possessed in the recalcification test about 8% of the potency of the standard heparin preparation. Some of its subfractions obtained from a fractionation on an Ecteola-cellulose column exhibited a higher activity.

This work supports previous findings on the chemical characterization of this preparation.
