Coagulation Factors of the Newborn and His Mother

Summary

In 50 mothers and their newborns 13 parameters of blood coagulation and fibrinolysis have been investigated. No correlation was found between the activity in the mother’s blood and in the cord blood.

The activity of the factors V, VIII and IX can be so low in the blood of the normal newborn that it is not possible to detect a hereditary coagulopathy early at birth time. Fibrinogen and factor XIII make an exception. The factor XIII is normal in the cord blood, even higher than in the mother’s blood.

The values of fibrinogen measured with different methods disagree (Table 1). These results are discussed in connection with the antithrombin II, antithrombin III, split products and plasminogen values.
