Publication by Grace

GRACE (Graphic Arts Composing Equipment) is a computer photatypesetter used in MEDLARS, a bibliographic publication and retrieval system in operation at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. MEDLARS objectives in the publication of Index Medicus and other bibliographies required the development of new high speed electronic and opTficSF’equipment to expose film copy for printing. The characteristics and limitations of the GRACE equipment are described in this article. Computer programs and operating procedures used in the production of MEDLARS publications by GRACE are discussed. Operational experience demonstrates that GRACE is a successful application of computer technology to bibliographic publication.

GRACE (Graphic Arts Composing Equipment) ist eine Computer-Photo-Setzmaschine die im MEDLARS Projekt, einem bibliographischen Publikations- und Information Retrieval System der National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland, in Betrieb ist. Die Aufgaben von MEDLARS in Bezug auf die Publikation des Index Medicus und anderer Bibliographien erforderten eine neuartige elektronische und optische Apparatur, die den Schnelldruck von Filmen ermöglicht. Der Artikel beschreibt die. Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der GRACE Apparatur und erörtert die Computer-Programme und Betriebsverfahren bei der Produktion der MEDLARS-Publikationen mit Hilfe von GRACE. Die bisherigen Betriebserfahrungen zeigen, daß GRACE eine erfolgreiche Anwendung der Computer-Technologie für bibliographische Publikation darstellt.
