Authors give a complete description of a free text system for the electronic data processing of pathology reports. It has been in experimental operation since 1 January 1971, and has analysed and stored 8,000 biopsy reports. The system is based on a thesaurus comprising 39,000 entry words; 10 000 additional key-words will be updated in the near future. To our knowledge, this is the first time that video-screens for data retrieval have been utilized in pathologic anatomy.

Authors discuss the necessary machine configuration and manpower, furthermore the structure of thesauri employed in pathology. Three stages of development have to be passed through from collection word by word to acquisition of diagnostic concepts. Today all free text systems in pathology are in the first stage of development.
