In den letzten Jahren hat die „mediterrane Ernährung“ immer mehr an Popularität gewonnen. Mittlerweile wird sie nicht nur empfohlen, um Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen vorzubeugen, sondern auch bei zahlreichen anderen Krankheitsbildern wird ein protektiver Effekt diskutiert– wie z. B. Adipositas, Diabetes, fortschreitende neurodegenerative Erkrankungen und Krebs.
