Significance

A series of N-type, arene-fused phospholes is synthesized. They possess enhanced electron-accepting abilities, as evidenced by cyclic voltammetry measurements. Further, P-functionalized compounds (1, 4, 5) display significant red shifts of emission and absorbance maxima compared to compounds 3. These experimental observations are found to be in good agreement with DFT calculations.
