Significance

This work describes the facile syntheses of polyaryl mesobenzanthrones. The authors noticed the formation of highly luminescent side products when conducting a benzyne cycloaddition reaction to tetracyclone derivatives. Further investigation and optimization yielded a simple two-step approach to these molecules.
