Significance

Silica gel supported Wilkinson’s catalyst 1 was prepared by functionalization of activated silica gel with 3-(diphenylphosphanyl)propyltriethylsilane followed by treatment with RhCl(PPh3)3 (eq. 1). The immobilized catalyst 1 promoted the transfer hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds in the presence of Na2CO3 to afford the corresponding alcohols in up to >99% yield (20 examples, eq. 2).
