Dieser Beitrag erläutert die möglichen Folgen der weiblichen Genitalverstümmelung
(englisch Female Genital Mutilation, FGM) in physischer, psychischer und sozialgesellschaftlicher
Hinsicht. Dazu gehört die komplexe soziokulturelle Verwurzelung dieser Praktik. Um
entwürdigende Situationen mit potenziell Betroffenen zu vermeiden, ist ein angemessener
und respektvoller Umgang mit dieser Tradition notwendig. In der reisemedizinischen
Fachberatung ist das Thema insbesondere dann wichtig, wenn Familien mit Kindern in
ihr Herkunftsland reisen und dort FGM praktiziert wird. Weiterhin beeinflusst FGM
auch die Gesellschaften, in denen über diese Praktik gesprochen und berichtet wird.
Das zeigt sich aktuell an der steigenden Nachfrage für ästhetische Eingriffe im Genitalbereich
ohne eine medizinische Indikation.
This article discusses the possible physical, psychological and social consequences
of female genital mutilation (FGM). It looks at the complex socio-cultural roots of
the practice as well as at its consequences in a European setting and asks not only
about the impact on individual women and girls within the ethnic groups carrying out
FGM but also about the effects this practice has on the society and country they live
in. The article also discusses the importance of advising medical aid workers traveling
to countries where FGM is common in order to assure appropriate and sensitive interaction
with potential victims and to avoid awkward situations for both practitioner and patient.
