Abstract

Serous microcystic cystadenoma is a rare cystic neoplasm of the pancreas, and in almost all cases it has a benign biological behavior. Due to its typical morphology (honeycombing, distinct septal vascularization, central scar) diagnosis by transabdominal ultrasound, endoscopic ultrasound, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging in most cases is not difficult. The infrequent oligocystic variant of serous cystadenoma may be difficult to distinguish from mucinous cystic neoplasms. Serous cystadenomas mostly are found in the body or tail of the pancreas, and are seen predominantly in female patients (f : m = 3 : 1) in the 6th oder 7th decade of life. Approximately half of all serous cystadenomas are asymptomatic at the time of presentation. Surgical treatment is indicated only in symptomatic patients and in the case of large tumors.
