Significance

Direct conversion of furfural, which is one of the biomass-derived chemicals, into 1,5-pentanediol was described. The direct conversion of furfural (0.4 g) under H2 (1.5 MPa) using Pt/Co2AlO4 (0.2 g, Pt: 1.8 wt.%) or Li-modified Pt/Co2AlO4 (0.2 g, Pt: 1.8 wt.%, Li: 0.4 wt.%) led to the 1,5-pentanediol 1 as a major product via hydrogenolysis (Pt/Co2AlO4: 30.6% yield at 110 ˚C; Li-modified Pt/Co2AlO4: 34.9% yield at 140 ˚C). In the direct conversion of furfural into 1,5-pentanediol, the Li-modified Pt/Co2AlO4 was recovered by centrifugation and reused twice without significant loss of catalytic activity.
