Significance

Regular push-pull chromophoric oligomers, both cyclic [AB]n and acyclic B[AB]n types, were synthesized by tandem [2+2] cycloaddition-cycloreversion (CA-CR) reactions, in which monomers A and B gave optimal results. The use of pentafluorinated TCVB or DCVB derivatives was essential for a facile CA-CR transformation [TCVB: (1,2,2-tricyanovinyl)benzene, DCVB: (2,2-dicyanovinyl)benzene].
