Significance

JP4-039 is a stable nitroxyl radical that is capable of crossing lipid bilayer membranes and scavenging reactive oxygen species, such as the superoxide radical anion. It concentrates in the mitochondria where it inhibits hydroperoxidation of the lipid cardiolipin. JP4-039 is being developed for the amelioration of radiation damage. The enantiomer of JP4-039 and five analogues were also prepared.
