Significance

The authors describe a base-catalyzed reaction to obtain polyaromatic furan derivatives from diynyl-1,6-diols. The reaction was optimized using the model reaction to form the phenyl derivative 2. The described conditions can be used to access a variety of related compounds with substituted phenyl (e.g. 4a-c) or heteroaromatic groups (6).
