Significance
Herein, the hydrogenation of carboxylic acids using TiO2-supported ruthenium nanoparticles is described. Reduction of levulinic acid, succinic acid, and itaconic acid was performed on Ru (0.6%)/TiO2 under 35 bar hydrogen pressure to give the corresponding lactones in 93% (1), 98% (3), 32.4% (4), and 58% (5) yield, respectively (TON: 38-247), where the catalytic activity of Ru (0.6%)/TiO2 is almost three times higher than that of conventional Ru (5%)/C catalyst.
