Significance

Loh and co-workers report a catalytic asymmetric Michael addition of aldehydes to vinyl sulfones using newly designed catalyst 2, synthesized on the basis of natural product structures. The authors demonstrated that catalyst 2 is efficient in the Michael reaction of aldehydes to vinyl sulfones. This class of the Michael reaction typically requires high catalyst loading and low reaction temperature. The new catalyst system provides milder reaction conditions.
