Significance

A new family of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is prepared via a four-step sequence ending with a threefold Pictet-Spengler reaction. Aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes participate in the triannulation, and functionalized 1,5,9-triazacoronenes (TACs, 1) are produced in good yields.
