Significance

Cyanohydrins are highly important synthetic building blocks. This paper described that a chiral vanadium(salalen) complex was able to catalyze the asymmetric cyanation of aldehydes with acetone cyanohydrin. With as low as 0.2 mol% catalyst loading up to 95% ee of various cyanohydrins was obtained.
